Response to appeal against penalties in Austrian GP

Mensaje por charlie »

The stewards team received an appeal by driver Marc against a penalty received in the Austrian GP. The case has been carefully examined by a different team of stewards and fully agree with original penalty. However, we think original explanation was too short and a better one should be provided.

Right after the start, Marc reaches 1st corner in parallel with 2 more cars: Dannyell and Viktor Jim. At this point there was no contact between them and we think Dannyell follows a normal line when he realized he has another car in the inside. For us, nothing to punish here.

Marc goes out of track for several reasons: because there's no space for 3 cars here, but we also think that braking late and in the no-rubber zone has something to do with it. Again, nothing to punish here.

Now, we come to the interesting part: point 11.6 of the regulations specify clearly that track is delimited by the white lines and kerbs are not part of it. Point 11.7 says that a driver off-track must return to track taking care about other drivers inside track. We think Marc should have lifted throttle pedal to rejoin the track after Danyell and Viktor Jim. The image shows the 1st contact in the accident sequence, and we think that without this contact, there's a high chance that the multiple accident had never happened.

The regulations allow a higher penalty for a dangerous track rejoin, but the stewards team in the 2nd review think original penalty is appropriate given thar driver was only 1 second off-track.
